When I’m not reading to educate myself in current events or for research, I read mostly for pleasure or escape rather than to discern literary symbolism or significance.
In fact, I’m so shallow that today when I read this quote (“When you begin to think the advances of doled out to writers by major corporations possess anything but an accidental correlation to artistic worth, you are finished.”), my first thought was: That’s exactly what I think. If I’m not getting e-mail telling me how to enlarge parts that I don’t have, messages land in my In Box or Junk Folder telling me that I have rich relatives that have never shown up anywhere on my family tree or that I’m just minutes away from earning my doctorate.
